The context is...

"We aim to create a hands-on experience to enable students to work in the real world with confidence, skills, and professionalism."

The Public Relations program in NU was assembling a small team of students to create a brand, website page for the Virtual Public Relations Firm. Participants can be directly involved in helping to determine a name for the firm, building a website that describes the firm to prospective students and clients, and setting up key pages for posting updates about the firm’s activities.

The Goal

During the pandemic and the quarantine, we do recognize our working and studying habit has fundamentally changed. Creating A DIGITAL COMMUNICATION AGENCY brand is a great opportunity for us to supercharged things virtual.

Here comes the challenges...

  • Build an official website from 0 to 1.
  • Design brand image and develop brand reputation.
  • Find an optimal layout or interactive method to encourage users to take targeted actions while browsing content.
  • How to improve SEO?

In order to
keep everyone on the same page...

Before starting any design work, we have to make sure that we are consistent in product goals, cooperation schedules, and rules. In addition, make sure who is our target user.
We found it helpful to plan an existing itinerary for the product and collaborating with the brand team to discuss the brand discovery.

Design Process

Why is this a chance?

Experimental learning is essential.

The participation of students outside the classroom is crucial to the growth of students. One of the benefits of student-run institutions is applied learning. Although students learn publicity, public relations strategy, event planning and other skills in the classroom, students learn multi-dimensional integrated knowledge in practical applications, such as basic leadership and management skills, and enhance professional confidence.

It will be a win-win platform.

Working in a student-run company can increase the chances of establishing relationships and meeting professionals. Since most job descriptions mention that students are expected to have professional skills and experience before the internship, the institutions run by students provide a safe and welcoming environment to practice these skills.

Users might be...

Northeastern is known for its Co-op and XN programs. We provide channels for students to find jobs and gain working experiences.

We are taking another step in bridging our students with the real world by integrating real-world experiences in the classroom. We provide more support and more guidance than ever before.

Identify Target Users

Interviewed 10 students and 2 clients used to work with.

User Insights

Considering these two types of users are different parties, we tried to find the same thing they are looking for, which they can benefit from each other.

      Key Findings

      4 User participation principle

We understand that although users have a high motivation to connect with people in other identities and positions, they need support and trust to achieve this. The important thing is that our service needs to provide job opportunities with disguised learning intentions, allowing people to choose to join according to their own needs, being student-led instead of being forced to pay tuition to achieve it.

Then we will help students gain practical experience
Because they want to apply their public relations skills to actual work.

      #2

If we create a platform that provides unique experiential project showcase
Then it can create an environment for information sharing and collaboration
Because public relations students are willing to participate in communication
      projects and exchange experiences.

      Opportunity

How might we design an environment that helps users gain practical work experience opportunities and encourages sharing and collaboration?

      Information Architecture

We analyze feasible user flows to determine at which inflection points we should provide users with multiple options.

      Visual Identity

Each component is added to the page according to design principles. This allows the team members to clearly know where and what accessories to use. While maintaining consistency with the rest of the web page, while showing the modern style of the web page requested by the product manager, it can speed up the design process, prototyping and development.

      Final thoughts and takeaways

Effective internal communication promoted the project

This is the first time I have directly communicated with PM and web administrator. Although they are all professors at the school, they served as the leader of the project. I spent a lot of time discussing and reviewing visual and interaction design. Not only to communicate with leaders, but I also learned how to effectively convey my ideas and prove the rationality of the design in the weekly discussions of designers. Furthermore, this incredible experience made me realize that effective and open internal communication can motivate the team and promote the entire project better.
